Day 1
Arrival and overnight stay at Quinta no Pinhal in Vila Nova de Poiares. A village with more than 8.000 citizens, surrounded by pine trees and eucalypt forests. This village is the capital of the local dish ´chanfana´*.
Day 2
On the dam lake Aguieira near Santa Comba Dão. In 1981 the Aguieira Dam in the river Rio Mondego became a fact. A few kilometers beyond the point where the Rio Dão pours in to the Rio Mondego. By this, one of the biggest dam lakes of Portugal, the Aguiera dam, was created.
The water level is not always the same. It depends on the amount of rain falling during the season as well as the use of the water for irrigation and for the hydroelectric power staion.
This is a perfect place for canoeing. You will leave at Pedra de Sé for the 8 km canoe trip through a stunning, hilly and idyllic natural area. You will arrive at the river beach of Senhora da Ribeira. Here you will find a cafe and other sevices. At the end of the day you will be braught back to the Quinta.
Day 3
After breakfast a transport to Penacova where you will start to canoe over the river Mondego (longest Portuguese river which has its origin in Portugal). The river Mondego flows through a protected area. One of the most ideal spots to catch the beautiful nature is from a boat on the river Mondego itself.
You will peddle into a creek and let yourself be overwhelmed by the expedient nature. At both sides rocky walls, and lots and lots of green. From time to time a small river beach, a fisherman or a cave. Then again the peace of nature untill you will get at the busyness of the ancient city of Coimbra. Because during this trip there are some small rapids, where it is difficult to pass by you will be guided through the trip by an experienced canoer.
Today will end at the border of the university city Coimbra. You can stay overnight at the village Vila Nova de Poiares or at the centre of Coimbra.universiteitsstad Coimbra.
* Chanfana (very tasteful stew made from goat meat on a wood fired oven).
